Ivy Brashear, a fifth-generation Appalachian, will discuss the news media’s shaping and reinforcement of narratives about rural places that are often rooted in stereotypes and misconceptions that flatten the varied cultural, social and political experiences that make those places incredibly complex. She covers this phenomenon and what can be done about it through the lens of Appalachia and Eastern Kentucky—a place much maligned and misunderstood in the news media.
