Zimmerman Collaborates on Oxford Handbook of Du Bois

Dr. Julie Zimmerman was invited to write chapters for two separate “handbooks.” In the social sciences, handbooks are edited works that bring together the most highly regarded scholars to produce a definitive volume on a particular topic. In this review period, she was invited to contribute to two different handbooks at two different publishers. The one pictured will be available in print or online.

The invited chapter “W.E.B. Du Bois and Rural Sociology” was written with Dr. Conner Bailey at Auburn University for The Oxford Handbook of W.E.B. Du Bois. Writing the chapter was a true collaboration that brought together their respective strengths and drew extensively on Zimmerman's research on the history of race and rural sociology. The handbook’s senior editor, Dr. Aldon Morris, is the Leon Forrest Professor of Sociology and African American Studies at Northwestern University and a nationally recognized expert on Du Bois. In a recent email, noting the importance of the chapter, Morris commented that it was “done masterfully.”
