Media Narratives that Shape Rural Places
Brashear, a fifth-generation Appalachian, discusses the news media’s shaping and reinforcement of narratives about rural places that are often rooted in stereotypes and misconceptions that flatten the varied cultural, social and political experiences that make those places incredibly complex. She covers this phenomenon and what can be done about it through the lens of Appalachia and Eastern Kentucky — a place much maligned and misunderstood in the media.

- Ivy Brashear, Ph.D. student in Communication at the University of Kentucky and graduate of the UK Community and Leadership Development Master’s Program

Beyond Language Barriers: Strategies to Engage with Latinx Communities
Aguilar and Rosales provide best practices, tools and resources to help your extension program increase engagement with the Latinx community — whether you are in ag, food and nutrition, community and rural development or 4-H, and whether you speak Spanish or not. The Latinx community makes up 4.2% of Kentucky’s population and will continue to grow. It is important to recognize the Latinx community is not a monolith, and learning how to engage them in extension programs will contribute to building integrated communities.
Presenters:
- Cintia Aguilar, Latino Programs Manager - Community and Rural Development for North Carolina State Extension, CALS, NC State University
- Roberto Rosales, Program Coordinator, Farmworker Health and Safety Educator for North Carolina State Extension, CALS, NC State University

Heirs Property
Heirs property — land passed down informally from one generation to the next without the benefit of a will that divides heirs’ interests — is socioeconomically and historically embedded with far-reaching implications. Johnson and Green will break down the economic and cultural issues related to these “tangled titles” and the resources extension agents and others have to assist with this issue at the community level.
Presenters:
- Irma Johnson, Kentucky State University State Specialist for Family Assets and Community Engagement; Realtor and Real Estate Instructor, Century 21 Simpson & Associates
- John J. Green, Ph.D., Director of the Southern Rural Development Center; Professor, Mississippi State University Department of Agricultural Economics; Affiliated Faculty, MSU Department of Sociology
Host:
- Julie N. Zimmerman, Ph.D., University of Kentucky Milton Coughenour Professor of Rural Sociology, Department of Community and Leadership Development
What’s the Story? Using Story Circles in Extension
In many lines of work, professionals view themselves as problem solvers. They are trained to ask, "What’s the problem?” In this session, we focus on asking a different question: "What’s the story?" This discussion uses a “fishbowl” process to experience and debrief a practical tool called a “story circle,” exploring how it might be adapted and utilized in community development, classroom and community-based education, and professional and organizational development.
Presenter:
- Scott Peters, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Global Development at Cornell University; Faculty Co-Director Emeritus of Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life
Host:
- Nicole Breazeale, Ph.D., Associate Extension Professor, Department of Community and Leadership Development at the University of Kentucky
