Event Description

Title: Remaining Land-Grant Fierce While Accepting the Land-Grant Truth of our Foundation

Speaker: Stephen Gavazzi

When: March 30th at 2:30pm via Zoom

The term “land-grant university” is quite common in the United States but few have interrogated what that term really means — from whom was this land “granted”? Join Stephen Gavazzi, human sciences professor and director of CHRR at The Ohio State University, in a discussion centered on the immense transfer of wealth from Tribal Nations that occurred in service to the establishment of these institutions of higher learning. Participants will understand how the “Stepping Out and Stepping Up Racial Justice Project” – developed through a series of internal and external grants – was designed as the beginning of a long path toward healing the harm done to Indigenous Peoples as a result of the Morrill Act of 1862.
